Information about your Family Session
Thank you for your trust in booking your family photography session with me, I am really looking forward to getting to know your family and spending some time with you all!
Here is some guidance on how to best prepare for your session so the whole family will be happy and relaxed on the day.
Dear Mum, you should dress yourself first in something you love! Whether a dress or trousers, make sure it’s something you feel really good and comfortable in, which you feel represents your style and the way you dress when you’re with your family.
After that you can dress the rest of the family accordingly, working around your outfit and your colours. I recommend coordinating clothing colours a little between you, but try to avoid all being matching as that makes for unnatural photographs.
Cozy earthy tones paired with more neutral tones look great for Autumn and Winter: dusty pink, blues, ochres, mustard yellow, greens, browns…
Lighter pastel tones, and brighter tones also paired with more neutral tones look great for Spring and Summer.
Ultimately it’s really important that you all feel like yourselves when you look back on the photographs, so no need to overdress, just wear clothes you all like and feel comfortable in. This is why I prefer to not give too much guidance or visual examples as each family is truly unique in style and taste - just be yourselves!
Some things to avoid in particular as they will draw attention in the photographs:
- Avoid big logos on t-shirts or jumpers.
- Avoid everyone wearing the same, for example everyone wearing white tops with jeans - don’t be afraid to mix things up a little, the photos will look more natural!
The session will be fun for the children involving lots of special playtime and cuddle time with Mummy and Daddy! To minimise any of them not being happy at the session, make sure they are well rested and have had a good meal beforehand. Do have some snacks and drinks already prepared for afterwards or for when they need a break.
For younger children it may help to have a few small toys or loveys at hand that you don't mind appearing in the photographs, in case they need a distraction.
I really try to create a relaxed and intimate atmosphere in my shoots so that the natural family connections and emotions between you all can flourish. All you need to do is be present with each other and enjoy each others company, play and laugh as though it were any other morning, spending some genuine quality time bonding with your family.
When in doubt about what to do, just turn to your children or partner and engage with them, this can be as simple as picking up your children and giving them a cuddle or a spin in the air, tickles are always fun, singing a song, putting on some music and dancing around, reading a story, even just putting an arm around your partner’s waist and smiling at each other - all those little interactions you would normally do to show your family how loved they are.
Throughout the session I will occasionally be prompting you a little with ideas of things you can do - this is essentially to loosen you up and get you moving, take your mind off the camera and remind you that truly all you need to do is act naturally and enjoy being present with your wonderful family.
With that achieved, the photos will take care of themselves, I promise!
Families often tell me this uninterrupted time spent together simply enjoying each others company is actually a nice break from their busy lives and schedules - so enjoy it!
Please share this information with your partner so you are both on board. Make sure neither of you have anything pressing to do on the session morning other than enjoy this time with your family.
Next up is a quick questionnaire so I can get to know you and your family a little better before our session together. Thanks in advance for your time submitting it as it will help me better tailor the session to your unique family.
Please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email if you have any further questions.
I look forward to spending some time with you all very soon!
